What does a barber do?

Barbers cut and style hair and shave and trim facial hair. The line between barbering and cosmetology is a licensing line rather than a technical one, and it falls in different places in different states: the razor is the usual divider, with barbering licenses authorizing shaving and many cosmetology licenses not.

The federal Standard Occupational Classification files this work as Barbers, 39-5011, and defines it as: Provide barbering services, such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling hair; trimming beards; or giving shaves.

What license does a barber need in 2026?

A barber is licensed separately from a cosmetologist in most states, with its own school approval, its own hour rule and its own exam. A handful of states let hours transfer between the two with a crossover course, and the terms of that crossover are set by the board rather than by the school.
