What does an esthetician do?

Estheticians clean and treat skin, which covers facials, hair removal, exfoliation and chemical peels, and in some states extends into equipment work that other states reserve to medical supervision. This is the role on this site with a real foot outside the salon: about one in seven works in a physician's office or another health practitioner's office rather than in personal care services.

What license does an esthetician need in 2026?

An esthetician holds a separate license from a cosmetologist in most states, with its own hour requirement and its own exam. Several states add a second, advanced tier, usually called a master esthetician, that authorizes procedures the basic license does not, and the tiers do not transfer cleanly between states.
