Cosmetology Schools in Dallas, TX, Ranked (2026)

Published

Edited by Zoe MacDougall, BS in Psychology

Fifteen cosmetology schools in Dallas and its ring rank on this page, and only three of them carry a Dallas address. The other twelve are scattered through the suburbs, from Irving at eleven miles out to Hurst at twenty-four, so the practical question here is usually the drive rather than the school.

The board side of the picture is separate. TDLR lists 33 licensed schools at Dallas addresses, two of them high school programs, and none of them reaches a ranked card, because most beauty schools are clock-hour institutions outside federal reporting. Nine more schools in reach were too small to rank. Dallas also shares its wage figures with two other cities.

Figures in this section: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation; BLS OEWS, May 2025; College Scorecard, June 2026.

The 15 Cosmetology Schools in and Near Dallas, Ranked on Completion

24 cosmetology programs report to the US Department of Education from inside Dallas or within 30 miles of downtown. 15 of them had at least 40 students and a published completion figure, and they are ordered on the share of students who finish within half again the program's normal length. The other 9 had too few students to rank, so the list stops at 15.

Where a school's board record was matched, the card carries it. A school that appears here without one is not unlicensed; it means the board's file and the federal file did not agree on its name, and the Texas page links the board's own lookup.

    70%

    Share of students who finish

    • Associate degree
    • 2 graduates a year
    • $35,200 program cost

    What the record shows

Based in Dallas, MediaTech Institute-Dallas is one of the cosmetology programs the federal government tracks. 70 percent of students across the school finish, out of 199 enrolled, and cosmetology is one of the programs inside that figure. That 70 percent is ordinary for this page, and it belongs to the whole campus; ask the cosmetology department for the program's own figure. Tuition is reported at $35,200. That price is roughly 2.2 times the $15,700 median, and nothing on this record explains the premium. 2 credentials in a year means the cosmetology program barely ran; ask whether it is enrolling this term before anything else. Graduates leave with an associate degree, not the usual certificate, and the general-education credits behind it can count toward a bachelor's later. Look this school up on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation register by its legal name before you pay, because that entry and not this one is what makes your hours count.

    Where it leads

Pay for cosmetologists around Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington runs from $26,560 at the tenth percentile to $60,150 at the ninetieth, with a median of $33,960. The metro median is about 11 percent above the Texas figure. Neither end of this market is extreme: the top tenth earns about 1.8 times the median and the floor sits 22 percent under it, which makes the first year a budget question rather than a survival one. The occupation is about as common around Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington as it is nationally.

    What the record shows

Michael's Barber & Hair Stylist Academy operates in Irving under license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The license here is a barber license, which means men's cutting, shaving and beard work. It takes a similar hour count to cosmetology and is a narrower ticket, and for someone who already knows they want that end of the trade, the narrowness is the point. 48 percent of students see the course through, out of 42 enrolled. Tuition is reported at $15,185 for the full program. Completion is the one figure that compares across trades, and 48 percent, 22 points under the 70 percent median, is the first thing to ask about. $15,185 is within 4 percent of the $15,700 median for a similar hour count, which is the going rate. 31 students completed a credential here in the reporting year. The board files it under license 705767; that record, not this one, is what makes your hours count.

    Where it leads

Around Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, the median barber earns $33,000, the bottom tenth $29,550 and the top tenth $81,660. The floor is almost the median here, so the whole spread is above it, and it belongs to people with a book. The trade is unusually concentrated around Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, about 2.0 times the national rate, so there are more chairs to compete for and more to be hired into.

Other Licensed Cosmetology Schools in Dallas

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation lists 33 currently licensed schools in Dallas. None of them appear above, either because the school takes no federal aid and so reports no completion figure, or because its cohort was too small to rank. Being on this list means the board licenses the school, which is the thing that makes your hours count. The board's file also holds 8 Dallas records that are no longer active, which is why the roster is longer than this table.

The 1,000-Hour Cosmetology Rule and the Agency Behind It in Dallas

A cosmetologist license in Texas takes 1,000 hours, and up to 500 of them can be done online. Half the program at home is a rule almost no other state matches, and for a working adult in Dallas it usually decides whether the thing is possible at all. The online hours rules by state show where Texas sits.

The agency is the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation rather than a cosmetology board. Texas folded that board into TDLR and put barbering and cosmetology under one roof. Your school holds a school license from TDLR, and you will hold a separate personal license from the same agency; those are two different documents and people mix them up constantly.

TDLR's school file carries an expiration date but no status column, so a lapsed license on this site is read off the date rather than stated by the agency. Its addresses are mailing addresses too, sometimes a PO box in a different town, which is why Dallas grouping is approximate rather than exact. The Texas ranking is built from the same file.

What the Dallas Ranked List Actually Shows

The two strongest completion figures belong to the two cheapest and smallest schools. Graduate America College in Garland finished 93% of 62 students at $9,300, and ABC Beauty Academy in Richardson finished 86% of 52 at $8,217. Both are worth weighing against their size: sixty-two students is a thin base for a percentage. Salon Boutique Academy in Addison is third at 77% of 200 for $11,850.

The most useful thing on this list is one chain measured four times. Ogle School Hair Skin Nails runs campuses at Hurst, North Dallas, Arlington and Dallas, all priced at $15,700 or $15,710, and they finished 75%, 74%, 72% and 69% of their students. Four sites within six points of each other is a steadier signal than any single school's number.

MediaTech Institute-Dallas is the outlier. It is the only associate degree on the list, at $35,200 for the program, more than twice what the diploma schools charge, and its 70% is measured across the whole college rather than the cosmetology course alone. Excluding it, tuition here runs from $8,217 to $16,750.

Nothing on the board side puts these schools in order. The roster carries license type and an expiration date, no rating and no inspection result, so the sequence on this page is the federal completion figure. Eight Dallas records had already expired at the August 2026 snapshot, which is the subject of the lapsed license count.

What Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Pays in the Beauty Trades

Dallas shares one BLS metro area with Fort Worth and Arlington, so all three city pages carry the same wage series. It employs 6,630 hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists at a median of $33,960, which runs $3,280 above the Texas median of $30,680, and the metro's bottom tenth ($26,560) clears the state's ($23,580) by nearly $3,000 as well.

Skincare holds the ceiling. The metro's 1,620 skincare specialists earn a median of $54,290, and the top tenth reaches $106,760 while the bottom tenth sits at $28,440. One job title, a range of nearly four to one. Esthetician pay gives the national comparison for that spread.

Barbering is small and dense: 790 barbers at twice the national concentration, a median of $33,000 and a top tenth of $81,660. Nail work runs the other way, 1,500 manicurists and pedicurists at well under half the national concentration, at a median of $33,800.

Each of these medians counts wage and salary employees. Booth renters are outside the survey, so the figures describe the part of the trade with a W-2 rather than the whole of it.
